Not Camp Madron

Yes. It says Camp Madron on it. But its not. Its the 1997 camper patch for the Boy Scouts who attended Rota Kiwan Scout Reservation. A little history may shed some light here. Back in the early 1970s (late 1973 for Southwestern Michigan Council (the owner of the ORIGINAL Camp Madron), Nottawa Trails Council, and Fruit Belt Area Council) there were a bunch of council mergers. For about 15 years, the new council, (Southwest Michigan Council) was able to run (sort of) all three camps from the three previous councils. They even bought another camp (called Northwinds Scout Reservation). Then they realized that they didnt have the scouts or the money to run all the camps. They also wanted to create a state-of-the-art, original for its time, theme based Cub Adventure Camp. They did, at Rota-Kiwan Scout Reservation. To do this, they sold Camp T. Ben Johnston, Camp Madron, and Camp Northwinds (yes some of the money was used for other stupid things too). This was in 1988-1989. Six or seven years later, they figured it would be a good idea to keep the names alive: So they renamed the Cub Adventure Camp as Camp T. Ben Johnston and the Boy Scout Residence Camp as Camp Madron. Both of these Camps were on the Rota-Kiwan Scout Reservation property. The names were featured on the camp patches for about a decade...Southwest Michiganders just rolled our eyes at the paid professionals who thought this was a good idea. Everyone else in the world added those Rota-Kiwan Scout Reservation patches to their Madron or Johnston collections, and wondered why there was such a gap in the dates on the patches. Now you know. So, if you see a Camp Madron or a Camp T. Ben Johnston (or Camp Ben Johnston or Camp Ben Johnson) dated AFTER 1989, just know the event took place on the property of Camp Rota-Kiwan.
