A train derailment occurred in Miamisburg, OH, on July 8, 1986. Due to the resulting chemical spill, the area surrounding the derailment was evacuated. Although Camp Hook was not in the area evacuated, it was close enough to cause concern for the safety of the scouts. The entire summer camp was temporarily moved to Camp Friedlander on July 9.
Dan Beard Council operated both Camp Hook and Camp Friedlander. Camp Hook was a Boy Scout Camp and Camp Friedlander was a Cub Scout Camp. A friendly rivalry between the staff members of both camps was responsible for the intentional misspelling of Camp Friedlander. The patch, of course, was issued by Camp Hook.
This special summer camp patch was made/given to the all the scouts who attended Camp Hook that week as well as the staff from both Camp Hook and Camp Friedlander.
