A little history about the patches - When our council (then Hampden Council) was looking for a new camp in the late 40s, they were able to buy the summer residents and farm of Horace A. Moses which was on Russell Pond. Horace Moses owned Strathmore Paper Co. When he was going into that business, he went to Scotland to learn how to make paper and was so impressed with the help he got that he adapted the thistle as a company symbol. The council used that symbol for the camp too so you will always see it on the camp patches. That design has been used for the camp patches from the beginning with a few years of different shapes added in. Horace Moses was also a philanthropist and started civic organizations. There is a postage stamp issued for him. The pink year came as a joke. The ranger always asked jokingly for a pink camp hat so one year he was given one at the end of camp staff dinner. Then the next year the Camp Director actually went with the pink patch color. The Program Director which was a woman was blamed. It was a joke all that summer. Some of the Scoutmasters were offended with the Barbie color patch. So, thats the story. YIS, Peter
